A permanent resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a Canadian citizen.

Spousal/Common Law Sponsorship

Canadian citizens or permanent residents in Canada can sponsor their spouses and their children to Canada as permanent residents.

Before You Can Sponsor Your Spouse In Canada, Here Are The Eligibility Criteria That You Need To Meet First. You Must Be:

  • At least 18 years old.
  • A citizen or permanent resident of Canada or a registered Indian in the Canadian Indian Act.
  • Not be in receipt of social assistance from the government other than due to disability.
  • Financially capable of supporting and providing for yourself, your spouse, and your spouse’s dependent children’s basic needs if applicable. But there is no minimum income requirement.

On The Other Hand, Your Spouse Must Be:

  • Married legally to you.
  • At least 18 years old.

For Common-Law Sponsorship, there are a few differences:

  • The person must have cohabitated for at least 12 months before the applicant can be sponsored.
  • The person needs a “Statutory Declaration of Common-Law Union”
  • At least 18 years old

Child Sponsorship

Spousal Sponsorship offers Canadian citizens or permanent residents in Canada to sponsor their spouses and their children to Canada as permanent residents

Eligibility Criteria to Sponsor Your Child:

  • The Child must be less than 22 years old
  • The parent needs to provide the birth certificate with the sponsor’s name on it
  • No Objection Letter from the other parent, if applicable
